Seligman Investments, however, started in the 19th century as one of the first major investment banks in the United States, and the company and Joseph Seligman played an important role in the finance of the Civil War and as a banking partners to Jay Gould, one of the most important railroad barons of the 19th century. They acted as Jay Gould's primary broker and were also engaged in the formation of Standard Oil and other gilded age industries.
