The Travelers wrote accident insurance policies, and John L. Way's agency paid many of these types of claims which were documented by grateful policy holders in The Travelers Record, including burns from radiator steam, a crushed foot, and amputated fingers:
In the album of Travelers cancels, J. W. Thompson & Sons are represented by two different types of handstamp cancels. The first is this straight line cancel referring to their offices located at The Detroit Chamber of Commerce. The second is a circular date stamp with no address.

H. K. Summem was paid $666.66 by The Travelers due to the loss of his right foot.
A Mr. Martin H. Thompson was thrown from his sleigh on Main Street in Kansas City and died. He carried a life insurance policy worth $5000. Remarkably, the thank you note indicates that he died on Feb 11, the death certificate was provided to The Travelers on Feb 14, and the payment was made on the 19th. No wonder The Travelers published this letter.
